Initials details on Canada’s new National Space Council were quietly released last week on the Canadian Space Agency website. The new multi-level governance structure is going to be big.

Heeding the repeated calls from industry group Space Canada, the federal government has announced that it will create a National Space Council. This and other space related items were in the 2024 budget released yesterday by the Liberal government.

Canadian industry is once again asking for a fresh and new Canadian space policy – along with a national space council – in the latest consultation process by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the Government of Canada.

If space is so central to Canada’s economy and a driver of economic growth during the pandemic, why is it that the Space Advisory Board is dormant and that Canada hasn’t taken the next logical step and create a National Space Council similar to that of the U.S.?

In this weeks Space Economy podcast we review the 8th National Space Council meeting held last week. It was the last meeting of the council before President-elect Biden’s administration takes over. It was notable for many reasons including announcing a new National Space Policy.

Humanity’s use of space is increasing every year as more nation states join the space club and commercial activities increases. It is important that all stakeholders work together towards a sustainable space environment.
