Space data technology company SkyWatch has a new partnership for high-resolution data of Earth – and it’s not involving satellites.

Satellogic, a company that specializes in sub-meter resolution Earth Observation (“EO”) data collection from space, is now making this data available to users of Waterloo based SkyWatch’s EarthCache platform. Sidus Space today announced it had selected Kitchener-Waterloo based SkyWatch as a partner to distribute commercial data from its satellite constellation through the TerraStream service.

Waterloo-based SkyWatch TerraStream service is expanding into edge computing. They announced the new service, TerraStream Edge, at the recent Amazon Web Services re:Invent conference.

Waterloo-based Skywatch is aiming to be a one-stop shop for Earth observation data. On a path in trying to achieve that goal, they’ve announced a new product, EarthCache-X. As part of yesterday’s announcement of a new Canadian Earth Observation (EO) strategy, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) announced it had funded 21 companies for its smartEarth initiative.

This past weekend the 10th International Space Apps Challenge was held globally. One of the prominent venues was in Waterloo where organizers included a workshop on hyperspectral data by sponsor Wyvern.

The International Space Apps Challenge created by NASA is set for the first weekend of October globally including in a record nine Canadian cities.

NASA’s Space Apps Challenge engaged over 2,000 students in its first global hackathon in 2012. By last year’s edition, that engagement had grown to 26,165 participants.
