In episode 8 of the SpaceQ podcast our guest is Ryan Anderson the lead organizer of Satellite Canada, an organization created to compete for a piece of the governments new $950 million Innovation Superclusters Initiative.

On Friday, July 28 Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Minister Navdeep Bains met with the Space Advisory Board to discuss the results of the recent space strategy consultations.

Canada’s new space strategy will not be unveiled this month as previously expected, but will be delayed until later this summer or early fall, multiple sources tell SpaceQ.

I read the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada press release and then I read the report (which is a converted powerpoint presentation). In reading both I couldn’t help but think this report is all about the ‘aero’ portion of the aerospace industry and that the space sector was lost in aerospace.

Yesterday the department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) issued an update to satellite licensing rules and a lifted a moratorium on applications for Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) systems which had been in place since June 15, 2016.

They blew it. Plain and simple. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) press conference yesterday was billed by the CSA as a funding announcement and the event included two senior cabinet ministers. So you would think the announcement would be more substantive. Unfortunately the hype didn’t meet expectations.  

Innovation, Science and Economic Development has posted a new website for the new Space Advisory Board (SAB). It includes the consultation paper we previously published and the cities and dates the SAB will be visiting over the course of the next month. They are listed below. 

On Tuesday the government announced the new Space Advisory Board and sent out invitations to selected people from the space community to attend the first Space Advisory Board Ottawa Roundtable on Canada’s Future in Space this Friday afternoon. SpaceQ sources who were contacted to attend were none too pleased about the short notice on such an important topic.

SpaceQ has learned some new details about the forthcoming Space Advisory Board. The board will consist of up to 12 people, likely with representation from across the country.

Today the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) posted notice that it is beginning a consultation process on the Licensing Framework for Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) Systems and clarification of application procedures for all satellite licence applications. After the consultation, which has no set time frame, ISED will release updated documents for the Policy Framework for Fixed-Satellite Service (FSS) and Broadcasting-Satellite Service (BSS) and Licensing of Space Stations.
