NAV CANADA and Iridium Announce new Joint Mega Hosted Payload Venture: Aireon

NAV CANADA and Iridium today announced a new joint venture to be run under the company Aireon LLC with support from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and suppliers Harris Corporation and ITT Exelis. The new company takes advantage of Iridium’s NEXT hosted payload capability and will deliver surveillance capability to Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) around the world and their commercial airline customers.

Telesat Nimiq 6 Telecommunication Satellite Launches

Today at 3:12 p.m. EDT today a Russian Proton M launch vehicle launched the Telesat Nimiq 6 satellite into an eventual Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO), a stationary location that keeps the satellite over one spot of the Earth as both the satellite and Earth rotate.

The future of Canada’s current big space project, the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) and the Canadian Space Agency budget cut were the subject of questions in yesterday’s House of Commons Question Period. The questions were brought forward by Liberal MP Marc Garneau. Garneau is a former astronaut and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) President and knows a thing or two about space.
