The U.S. Center for Strategic and International Studies has released the seventh edition of Space Threat Assessment, an annual report that provides an update on current threats and looks at ongoing trends.

The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research recently held a conference concerning space matters, including one on building “common understandings between stakeholders” when it comes to space security. A large theme of the panel was how much power commercial companies have these days, and the regulations that do (and do not) exist to manage their power.

Following the release last week of the new Outer Space Security lexicon, and ahead of the upcoming Outer Space Security Conference in a few weeks, the Secure World Foundation and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) have launched a new Space Security Portal (SSP).

Earlier this year the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) held a Space Security Conference that included several Canadian voices and was co-organized by The Simons Foundation Canada.

The 2019 Space Security Index is now available and the report contains positive developments, but clearly shows more work needs to be done.

Last week the Department of Defence (DND) announced 160 contracts valued at $26.8M for 16 science and technology challenge areas which included 20+ contracts for space organizations.

Waterloo based Project Ploughshares, a Canadian peace-and-security think tank, has released Space Security Index 2018 which states security conditions in outer space are deteriorating and leadership is needed.

It should not come as a surprise that space debris tops the list of issues in the 2017 edition of the Space Security Index.
