There is a space race ongoing in Canada and it’s not what you might expect. In fact, it’s flying under the radar and the government is ill-prepared to deal with it because frankly they’re not paying enough attention.

It was a short speech in which many in the audience where expecting your typical Ministerial speech. But ever so subtly the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, a former astronaut and President of the Canadian Space Agency, surprised many with one short sentence.

A group of Canadian astronauts expressed their support Friday for a space strategy to direct Canada’s goals in space, days after a coalition of organizations banded together to ask government for clarity quickly.

The Canadian Space Commerce Association (CSCA) on August 4th called on all the federal parties taking part in the election to commit to a long-term space plan by the end of 2016. Both the NDP and the Liberals have publicly committed to a long-term space plan, though with no fixed date set.

Parliament has adjourned for the summer and members of parliament (MP) are back in their ridings doing the summer BBQ circuit. But when they get back in the fall they’ll be in full election mode. So this seems an appropriate time as any to look ahead and gaze into my crystal ball and see what would happen if the Liberal’s were elected.

The future of Canada’s current big space project, the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) and the Canadian Space Agency budget cut were the subject of questions in yesterday’s House of Commons Question Period. The questions were brought forward by Liberal MP Marc Garneau. Garneau is a former astronaut and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) President and knows a thing or two about space.
