The Canadian Astronomical Society (CASCA) has posted an update on Canada’s involvement in the Square Kilometer Array (SKA).

Earlier this month, the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) disclosed $518 million of infrastructure funding it will give to universities across the country. Some of these projects have direct applications to space exploration, while others might be repurposed for astronauts and astronomy once the work becomes a little more advanced. This past August the Liberal government prorogued parliament ostensibly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Canadian Astronomical Society has posted a statement online that focuses on both satellite debris and the sheer number of satellites in orbit and the related issues for the ground based astronomy community.

The space community is using another opportunity at its disposal like never before in the form of the federal pre-budget consultations, to get its message out of a funded space strategy.

Today the Canadian Astronomical Society (CASCA) announced the Harvey B. Richer Gold Medal for Early Career Research in Astronomy. According to CASCA “the Richer Medal will be presented in odd numbered years to an individual in recognition of significant and sustained early career research in astronomy.”
