The Canadian space sector has just over a week to finalize its federal funding suggestions, following a scheduling shift in the governmentโs annual pre-budget consultation process.
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) is currently accepting written briefs for the 2026 federal budget for the 2027-28 fiscal year. However, to align with the new fall budgeting cycle introduced in 2025, the committee has accelerated its timeline, moving the consultation period to the spring. The deadline for submissions is now Friday, May 22, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST. The notice was posted to the FINA website on April 22, 2026.
For the Canadian space industry, this annual exercise is the primary mechanism for formalizing funding priorities, highlighting technology gaps, and proposing new initiatives to federal policymakers.
The push for space defence
While previous cycles have featured requests for commercial space funding, Earth observation, education and exploration robotics, space defence could dominate this year’s industry submissions. With orbital domains becoming increasingly congested and contested, domestic space capabilities are increasingly being framed as essential infrastructure for national sovereignty and security.
Organizations submitting briefs should note a few standard guidelines. FINA limits submissions to 2,000 words, a count that includes any text within footnotes, graphs, or images. Additionally, organizations are limited to a single brief.
Beyond the written word, submitting a brief is how organizations get a seat at the table. All submissions automatically count as a request to appear as a witness, though the committee will only select a handful of organizations to actually testify. Securing one of these invitations gives space sector advocates a direct line to answer MPs’ questions.
All submitted briefs will be published publicly on the committee’s website.
