The House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) is once again looking for input as part of its annual pre-budget consultations.

This is an opportunity for the space community to get their ideas in front of the influential committee.

As had been the case for the last two years, there is no theme accompanying the pre-budget consultation. So those interested in participating can put forward anything they want. However, while submitting a brief for the consultation is a useful exercise, writing the brief in such a way as to get the committee’s attention can potentially get you a place to appear before the committee.

This year timeline requesting written briefs to be submitted through the Committee’s website is no later than Friday, August 4, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Once submitted Committee Clerks will review them and “extend invitations to selected individuals and organizations to appear in the fall.” All written briefs “will be considered as having made a request to appear.” If you do submit a brief and have a government relations person on your staff and you want to appear in front of the committee, it never hurts to work your network.

Hearings will be held in Ottawa and the following cities: Charlottetown, Halifax, Fredericton, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Québec, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver. It is unclear if appearing in front of the committee will be in-person, virtual or hybrid.
