A Latching End Effector (LEE) ground spare, or as it’s sometimes referred to, the “robotic hand”, and which sits at each end of the Canadarm2, is being launched to the International Space Station (ISS) tomorrow onboard a SpaceX cargo resupply mission.

Yesterdays spacewalk successfully completed a choreographed series of movements over three spacewalks since last fall to swap MDA built Latching End Effector’s (LEE) from the Canadarm2 to its Mobile Base System and stow one for a return to Earth.

When the Canadarm2 was built engineers made sure that it could get software updates even though it designed almost 20 years ago using what we would now consider outdated hardware.

A spacewalk which was scheduled for early tomorrow morning has been postponed after the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) said in a post on Facebook that it had found a solution to the problem.

The communication problem first experienced when astronauts replaced an ageing Latching End Effector (LEE) on the Canadarm2 last Tuesday seemed solved after it was installed a second time. That apparently is not the case, and mission managers have decided to remove the newly installed LEE and replace it with the one it just replaced.

The first of two scheduled spacewalks by astronauts on the international space station went almost by the book and succeeded in replacing an aged Latching End Effector on the Canadarm2.

In two planned spacewalks, astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) will install a new Canadian made Latching End Effector (LEE), or robotic hand, on the Canadarm2, replacing its ageing counterpart.

NASA has scheduled spacewalks on January 23rd and 29th to replace another degraded Canadarm2 hand on the International Space Station (ISS).

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) successfully completed the third in a series of spacewalks on October 20th that was needed to replace a  robotic “hand” on the Canadarm2.

This Thursday the first of three spacewalks will take place to replace one of the hands, know as Latching End Effectors (LEE) on the station’s Canadarm2.
