The Government of Canada has issued a new warning in its August update, the 2026 wildfire season is far from over. With more than 4.1 million hectares already burned and 582 fires currently active, federal officials anticipate that above-average temperatures will keep the risk of new blazes high through September.
As communities from British Columbia to Ontario grapple with evacuations and hazardous smoke, Canada is using space technology to protect its citizens. That technology based is set to expand in a few years with a new dedicated WildFireSat constellation added to the existing tools.
“We are still in the heart of the 2026 wildfire season, and communities across the country are facing the very real impacts of these fires,” said Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience. She noted that federal and provincial governments are working tirelessly to support communities through the remainder of the season.
To close the early detection gap, the Canadian Space Agency has spent years developing the WildFireSat program. The initiative is designed to launch dedicated satellites equipped with infrared sensors to detect the heat of new fires from space. These satellites aim to monitor Canada from space and Spotting a fire early can mean the difference between a minor incident and a catastrophic evacuation.
The path to getting these tools into orbit has been rocky. Earlier this year, the federal government abruptly terminated a $72-million contract with Spire Global for the WildFireSat mission. The termination was issued for convenience, with no explanation given, and halting a project that was scheduled to launch a dedicated 10-satellite constellation by 2029.
The Spire contract cancellation had immediate ripple effects across the space sector. Spire had partnered with OroraTech to build the constellation. OroraTech is a company specializing in space-based thermal intelligence, and they were tasked with providing the actual wildfire detection sensors and the data processing system for the Canadian spacecraft. Losing the primary government contract could have stalled progress. Instead, the Canadian Space Agency is now pushing for a much faster, more flexible development cycle.
Lisa Campbell, president of the Canadian Space Agency, recently urged the sector to embrace agile procurement. The goal is to get operational tools into orbit quickly rather than waiting years for a perfect, rigidly engineered system. Canada spends roughly $1 billion annually fighting wildfires. This makes the need for immediate satellite-based intelligence a national priority that cannot afford endless bureaucratic delays.

While the government recalibrates its internal projects, the commercial space sector is stepping in to fill the void directly. OroraTech is moving forward with its own infrastructure and recently appointed Helena van Mierlo as the managing director of its Canadian operations. Van Mierlo brings 24 years of experience from the Canadian Space Agency. She previously served as the mission manager for the very WildFireSat program that is currently undergoing a reset.
Her move to the private sector underscores a growing trend of industry experts bridging the gap between government needs and fast-moving commercial solutions. By bringing a former top government official on board, OroraTech signals that it is ready to deliver the exact thermal intelligence Canada needs right now, without waiting for the next federal procurement cycle to conclude.
The company is already showcasing the value of its orbital sensors. In July, OroraTechโs OTC-P1 satellite successfully detected early signs of the Matthew Creek Fire near Fernie, British Columbia. The satellite peered through dense forest and rugged mountainous terrain from low-Earth orbit.
By utilizing commercial orbital assets, first responders gain a crucial advantage. They receive thermal data during the afternoon blind spots when fires grow the fastest. OroraTech reported that its constellation is already contributing a significant portion of the total wildfire data used in monitored areas, showing that smaller, purpose-built satellites can make a real difference on the ground.
As the fall approaches, persistent drought conditions across northern and western Canada will continue to test provincial resources. Over 500 international firefighters from countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Australia have already been deployed to assist local crews in Ontario and British Columbia.
