Western University is home to some of Canada’s top meteor and asteroid experts and this Thursday, June 30th the Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration at Western will host public lectures and other events on Asteroid Day.
Asteroid Day is a global awareness campaign designed to bring people together to learn about asteroids and what future impacts on Earth could mean.
Here are the details for Western University’s Asteroid Day activities:
Date: Thursday, 30th June 2016
Time: 3:00 to 7:00 PM (come and go as you please; entry is free)
Location: The Hume Cronyn Memorial Observatory, Western University
Public Talks by three Asteroid Experts:
- 3:00 PM Prof. Peter Brown “The Tunguska event and the hazard of asteroid impacts”
- 4:00 PM Prof. Paul Wiegert “Fire from the sky: how rocks from space fall to Earth”
- 5:00 PM Prof. Mikael Granvik “Killer Asteroids”
- 6:00 PM Prof. Audrey Bouvier “Meteorites: messengers from asteroids and planets”
There will also be a meteorite expert on site so if you think you have a rock that might be meteorite then bring it along to have it checked out.
There will also be meteorites and impactites on display and solar observing, weather permitting.
