Future space explorers are now one step closer to surviving in the harsh vacuum of outer space. The Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM), a privately-built prototype expandable module built by American-based Bigelow Aerospace and currently attached to the International Space Station (ISS), has been renewed by NASA to at least 2020.

In January 2018 the International Space Exploration Coordination Group will release third edition of the Global Exploration roadmap.

While the International Space Station will still be used until at least 2024 what comes next? That discussion has been ongoing within the space community for some time. The use of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for business and research is only going to increase. National space agencies though are looking beyond LEO for the next challenge including cislunar exploration.

It’s an exciting time if your job is to come up with ideas for future space exploration missions. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is looking for concept ideas for possible future missions, including human, to the area between Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and the moon, including the lunar surface.

As expected the Canadian Space Agency has begun to release the first in series of Request for Proposals (RFP) related to future post-ISS human spaceflight, space exploration and space astronomy with the release of its Lunar Surface Mobility Concept RFP.

Space is hard. While startups success rates are slowly increasing in low earth orbit (LEO), it’s even harder for startups looking beyond low earth orbit. In fact, no company with the goal of operating a commercial enterprise near or on the moon, can call themselves a success, yet. But just maybe we’ll the emergence of one as a the result of the Google Lunar XPRIZE.

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is officially setting its gaze on the deep-space ‘horizon’ with a study that could lead to man-tended stations near the moon and Mars.
