Japan’s H-IIA rocket recently launched the Greenhouse Gases Observing SATellite-2 (GOSAT-2) with an instrument developed by ABB in Quebec City.

GHGSat is on a roll having raised more funds and looks to pad its lead in the commercial monitoring of global emissions from small satellites.

While originally designed to last only two years, SCISAT is set to celebrate its fifteenth birthday this August. The concept for the mission came about over 20 years ago and some of the data being collected is still unique. There’s no other satellite like it, and plans to replace it are in a bureaucratic holding pattern.

At 15-kilograms, Claire, the size of a microwave oven, zips around the planet at 7-kilometres a second. When flying above the Alberta oil sands, her sensors zero in on a tailing pond and record carbon dioxide and methane emissions. Claire is a demonstration microsatellite operated by GHGSat, the first commercial company to offer greenhouse gas monitoring services using satellite technology.
