Perspectives on a European Space Strategy

Ahead of the 17th European Space Conference, the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) has released a paper titled An Initial Perspective on a European Space Strategy 2040: From Vision Towards Implementation.

ESPI is explicit in introducing the paper that it “is not a space strategy document, nor does it represent the strategic reflections of any particular stakeholder in Europe.”

Rather, ESPI states it is a “part of its mandate to provide independent analysis, proposals and recommendations on strategic space issues to European decision makers and institutions.”

They go on and say, “it is informed by the 1st ESPI European Space Strategy Workshop with ESPI members, advisors and external experts in September 2024, complemented by other engagements with ESPI stakeholders such as at the 18th ESPI Autumn Conference in October 2024.”

The 23 page document is divided into six sections.

  1. Need for a coherent European Space Strategy
  2. Foundations of a European Space Strategy 2040
  3. Initial perspectives on the security & defence dimension
  4. Initial perspectives on the economic dimension
  5. Beyond security & defence and economics
  6. A collaborative process
