MDA Space is purchasing Blue Canyon Technologies (BCT) from RTX Corporation in an all-cash deal valued at US$620 million. This acquisition represents a strategic push by the company to secure a larger share of the lucrative U.S. space defence market.

The transaction brings a profitable, Colorado-based satellite and spacecraft component manufacturer into the MDA Space fold. BCT possesses an 18-year flight heritage and holds facility security clearances from the U.S. Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency.

“Governments are not treating space as a discretionary investment,” MDA Space Chief Executive Officer Mike Greenley said during a conference call. “They are treating it as a national priority.”

The deal adds US$3.5 billion to the total pipeline for MDA Space. It should be noted tha as of the end of the first quarter of 2026, MDA Space’s current backlog stands at C$3.7 billion.

With respect to BCT, 75 per cent of revenue and pipeline opportunities at BCT are tied directly to the defence sector. The U.S. Space Force budget for fiscal 2027 alone is proposed at US$55 billion. Furthermore, government space defence spending reached US$74 billion globally in 2025.

From a technology perspective, BCT delivers guidance, navigation, and control systems alongside specialized vehicle stabilization technologies according to Greenley. And that their platforms are known for high precision, precise pointing accuracy, and low jitter. BCT also utilizes a modular architecture that allows for rapid configuration to meet specific mission requirements. These components will create vertical integration opportunities for the MDA Aurora and MDA Midnight satellite platforms. Currently, MDA operates as a buyer of these precision components, but this transaction could bring elements of the supply chain in-house.

Because MDA Space is a Canadian entity acquiring a U.S. defence contractor, the company will implement a Foreign Ownership, Control, or Influence mitigated structure. This standard regulatory mechanism establishes an independent operational board to ensure U.S. national security protocols are maintained. The arrangement allows the acquired firm to operate with independence while actively selling larger Canadian-built satellite platforms to American military clients.

“Historically, we have served the US defense customers as an emergency supplier,” Greenley said. He noted the acquisition provides the company with an established U.S. presence, proven program delivery to defence customers, and a pathway to pursue classified work and compete for prime contracts.

MDA expects the 400 employees and dual manufacturing facilities in Denver and Boulder to act as the primary delivery vehicle for full satellite solutions to the U.S. government. The transaction is scheduled to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
