The future of Canada’s most famous space robotics technology is no longer in limbo. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has affirmed plans to repurpose investments in the Canadarm3 program to support surface operations on the Moon and possibly new projects in low-Earth orbit (LEO).
Originally designed for the Lunar Gateway, a small space station intended to orbit the Moon in support of astronauts heading to the surface, the Canadarm3 program faced uncertainty when the U.S. revamped its Artemis program. The CSA had previously signalled it would look for ways to keep the initiative alive. Now, officials have officially confirmed that the technology will be adapted for the Artemis ground mission and look to commercialization opportunities including space stations in LEO.
This decision means that Canadian robotic engineering will continue to play a direct role in space exploration. The robotic systems could assist astronauts and help build infrastructure on the surface of the Moon. The move also protects the supply chain and high-tech jobs. MDA Space, the company which built previous versions and is contracted to build this next-generation robotic arm, welcomed the clarity and the ongoing commitment from the federal government.
“After the landmark success of the Artemis II mission around the Moon, all eyes have turned to the lunar surface,” said Mike Greenley, chief executive officer of MDA Space. He added that the shift offers a rare opportunity to maintain Canada’s four-decade competitive advantage in space robotics. “We are fully committed to working with the Canadian Space Agency to get Canada on the Moon and continue this country’s proud legacy in space.”
Since 1981, Canadian robotics have been crucial to human spaceflight. The original Canadarm flew on 90 Space Shuttle missions, and Canadarm2 has operated on the International Space Station for a quarter of a century. The Canadarm3 project continues this legacy.
Federal officials emphasize that space exploration is vital to the national economy. Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry, stated in a government release that “Space exploration is essential to Canada’s economic future. It drives innovation, creates high-value jobs, attracts investment, and strengthens the industries and technologies that keep us competitive. By investing in space today, we are building the companies, talent, and capabilities Canada needs to grow our economy, create good jobs, and compete in the global economy of tomorrow.”
