Edmonton-based Earth observation company Wyvern has secured nearly $3 million in repayable federal funding through the Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII) to enhance its space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, with a focus on advancing maritime monitoring and ship identification technologies. The announcement was made late Friday afternoon.
The $2,993,348 million allocation to Wyvern represents the largest single commercial investment in a broader $6.1 million defence funding package announced by Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan). While the funding also provides capital to establish a University of Alberta defence commercialization centre and an Indigenous defence supply chain program via Cando, the investment in Wyvern underscores the continuation of targeted federal effort to build domestic space capabilities.
“This investment from PrairiesCan strengthens our ability to deliver operational space-based intelligence for Canada’s defence community. With 5 hyperspectral imaging satellites already on orbit, Wyvern is advancing ship identification and maritime monitoring capabilities that strengthen Canada’s domestic defence supply chain and give defence users a new layer of insight โ built right here in Edmonton.”
This investment aligns with Canada’s updated Defence Industrial Strategy, which aims to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for operational data and technology. Theย RDIIย is a three-year $379.2 million national program delivered by Canadaโs seven Regional Development Agencies.
