The concept of a Canadian Wildland Fire Monitoring System was first proposed in 2012. That concept is now nicknamed WildFireSat, and has moved into Phase A with contract awards of $1.35 million to Honeywell and MDA.

Sources tell SpaceQ that the new Canadian Space Strategy to be released later today will include a review of space related regulatory frameworks.

Canada’s mining sector is in need of a long term plan to maintain Canada’s leading position in the industry as well as prepare for the future. That’s what provincial and federal ministers agreed to last summer. That plan is called the Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan (CMMP) and consultations are ongoing.

While innovation is seemingly in every funding press release issued by the government, there’s little innovation happening in Ottawa’s bureaucracy, and that’s hampering business to the point that foreign investment dollars in Canada’s space sector might head for more responsive countries. Throw in an apparent government conflict of interest, and you’ve got a Made in Ottawa bureaucratic migraine for the government.
