The Department of National Defence has awarded Launch Canada a $1.2-million grant to accelerate domestic student rocketry training and build out sovereign launch capabilities.

Announced through the IDEaS “Launch the North” initiative in Timmins, Ont., the strategic funding addresses a critical gap in Canada’s aerospace sector. While the country excels in satellite manufacturing and orbital robotics, domestic propulsion engineering has historically lagged.

The new funding targets this vulnerability by directly supporting advanced university propulsion projects, with a specific focus on complex systems such as custom turbopumps and rotating detonation engines.

By investing at the grassroots level, Ottawa aims to establish a robust, highly skilled talent pipeline.

This initiative ensures graduates are immediately prepared for critical engineering roles at emerging domestic launch providers, ultimately reducing Canada’s reliance on increasingly congested foreign spaceports.
