The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has awarded a contract worth up to $745,000 to The Growcer Inc. to design a deployable greenhouse that will tackle food insecurity in Canada’s North, leveraging years of research and technology intended to sustain astronauts on deep space missions.

They will partner with the Arctic Fresh Group of Companies, an Inuit-owned enterprise in Nunavut, to co-develop a concept for a deployable Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) unit. The concept is simple, though the execution is not easy. In simple terms, the CEA is an enclosed space like a retrofitted shipping container where engineers optimize light, temperature, and humidity to grow fresh produce without outside soil or sunlight.

While space firms like Canadensys are currently working on separate contracts to design an actual lunar greenhouse, the space agency views remote northern communities as a testing ground for extreme-environment food systems. This research goes both ways. Building reliable food systems for the Arctic helps engineers figure out how to feed astronauts on the moon, while space technology directly benefits communities in harsh climates on Earth.

Both scenarios face a similar logistical hurdle. Relying on continuous resupply missions is expensive and in the case of the Arctic, vulnerable to weather delays. Whether it is a lunar base or a remote hamlet, the inhabitants must be able to produce their own calories.

“Growing nutritious food in an extreme and hostile environment will be a challenge, one that Inuit communities in Nunavut are familiar with,” the space agency stated in its announcement. “In many ways, the development of food production technologies for future space missions can help improve food accessibility in these remote northern communities.”

For years, the federal government has funded research into these types of closed-loop farming systems. Previous initiatives like the Naurvik project in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, demonstrated that shipping containers powered by wind and solar energy could successfully yield fresh greens through the dark Arctic winters. This new contract builds directly on those early foundations.

The project team will ground the new design in Inuit knowledge and the daily realities of northern living. By bridging space exploration concepts with community health needs, the effort aims to provide immediate practical benefits to residents facing food supply constraints.
