Gov. Gen. Mary Simon announced today 80 appointments to the Order of Canada including Peter Annan who was made a Member for his contributions to “near-surface geophysics.”

In making the announcement the Governor General described Annan’s career as follows:
Peter Annan has made transformative contributions to the field of near-surface geophysics for more than five decades. A distinguished engineer, he revolutionized subsurface exploration by introducing airborne electromagnetic and ground-penetrating radar systems. Through his companies, he provides advanced prospecting solutions for scientific research and industrial applications to clients worldwide.
Early in his career Annan was part of the NASA Apollo 17 mission, in particular he was a lead investigator on the the Surface electrical properties experiment (SEP) an “experiment was used to explore the subsurface material of the Apollo 17 landing site by means of electromagnetic radiation.”
According to his Wikipedia profile “SEP was the subject of Annan’s graduate school research and used radio waves to scan as far as a few kilometres below the surface of the Moon.”
