MDA Space announced the launch of MDA MIDNIGHT today at the 41st Space Symposium in Colorado Springs. The new offering is a space control platform designed specifically for defence organizations to protect critical assets in the space domain.

MDA MIDNIGHT, a manoeuvrable spacecraft, marks the latest push by the company as it adds new defence products, deepening its reach into the active orbital defence market and what the industry calls โ€˜bodyguardโ€™ satellites.

The introduction of the MIDNIGHT platform arrives amidst an increasing demand for Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO) capabilities. As highlighted by recent reporting from the Secure World Foundation on global counterspace capabilities, international defence organizations are increasingly seeking physical, on-orbit methods to protect their critical infrastructure from adversarial threats.

MDA Midnight integrates the companyโ€™s software-defined Aurora satellite bus with its Skymaker commercial robotics technology. According to the company, the resulting platform is designed to track, counter, capture, and, if necessary, de-orbit targeted space assets.

The core operational capabilities of the Midnight platform include:

  • On-orbit inspection: Providing close-proximity status reporting on LEO assets.
  • Electronic countermeasures (ECM): Detecting, attributing, and mitigating signal interference.
  • Active RPO: Facilitating cooperative satellite capture, asset relocation, and on-orbit refuelling.
  • De-orbiting: Safely removing a customer’s non-operational assets

The financial markets have already demonstrated confidence in MDAโ€™s broader push into the defence sector. Shares of MDA are up over 62 per cent year-to-date on the Toronto Stock Exchange, trading near $43.

“With new and emerging threats from adversaries, the critical space infrastructure that we all depend on requires greater protection,” said Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space, during the announcement. “Backed by 40 years of on-orbit robotics operations, decades of mission planning and satellite operations… MDA Midnight brings together the elements required for this critical mission.”

MDA stated it is currently seeking military partnerships to finalize upcoming mission profiles and timing for the platform’s initial deployments.
