The next generation robotic arms to be used for future space missions were unveiled this morning at the MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates’ (MDA) facilities in Brampton, Ontario. NASA has released the following animation which shows how the winds of a large Arctic cyclone broke up the thinning sea ice cover of the Arctic Ocean in early August 2012. According to NASA the storm likely contributed to the ice cap’s shrinking to the smallest recorded extent in the past three decades.

The Spacelab pallet, which was used to carry the Canadarm2 and the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (Dextre) into orbit, will soon be visiting Canada. It has left the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and is now en route to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the French space agency (Centre national d’tudes spatiales or CNES) successfully completed a series of tests for the first trial launch of a stratospheric balloon scheduled for 2013. The tests took place from September 10-13 at the proposed launch site is in Timmins, Ontario.
