Next Generation Canadarms Unveiled at MacDonald Dettwiler Facility in Brampton

The next generation robotic arms to be used for future space missions were unveiled this morning at the MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates’ (MDA) facilities in Brampton, Ontario. The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) Astronaut Chris Hadfield joined other government, CSA and MDA representatives to make the announcement.

"Canada On Orbit" Gala to Celebrate Alouette 1 Anniversary and Satellite Contest Winners

A special gala evening is planned for later this month to mark a significant Canadian space historical event and the culmination of a major space contest. The “Canada On Orbit” gala dinner will mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of Alouette 1, Canada’s first satellite, launched September 29, 1962. At the gala, the winner of the 2012 Canadian Satellite Design Challenge will be announced.

Arctic Cyclone Breaks Up Sea Ice

NASA has released the following animation which shows how the winds of a large Arctic cyclone broke up the thinning sea ice cover of the Arctic Ocean in early August 2012. According to NASA the storm likely contributed to the ice cap’s shrinking to the smallest recorded extent in the past three decades.

Historic Space Shuttle Pallet Coming to Canada

The Spacelab pallet, which was used to carry the Canadarm2 and the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (Dextre) into orbit, will soon be visiting Canada. It has left the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and is now en route to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.
